The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has made the decision to withdraw its candidature from the April 30, 2024, by-election for the Ejisu Constituency.
On March 7, 2024, John Ampontuah Kumah, a member of parliament for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), passed away, leaving the seat vacant.
The NDC’s Ashanti Regional Organizer, Isham Alhassan, clarified that the party is deciding not to participate in the by-election in order to save money and focus on getting ready for the general elections, which are set for December 7, 2024.
Highlighting the party’s dedication to ensuring John Mahama wins the general elections in December, Alhassan said that any involvement in the by-election would take resources away from the main objective of winning the general elections.
“I am speaking on authority that the NDC will not contest this by-election. We are winning the election for His Excellency John Mahama, so any preparation that we have is geared towards the December election, and that is our focus,” Alhassan stated per media reports.
“We don’t want to profit from (John Kumah’s) death,” he continued. Given the short notice, any political party that runs in this election will only incur financial losses if the Electoral Commission does not hold the poll before May.
The Electoral Commission (EC) will supervise the procedure to guarantee fairness and transparency as the NDC chooses not to participate in the by-election.
With nine candidates approved for the party’s parliamentary primary set for April 13, 2024, the NPP is presently choosing a candidate for the by-election.
