The NDC’s Upper East Regional Communications Officer, Abdallah Salifu, confirmed the news, stating that he passed away following a brief illness.

He said that on Sunday, March 24, Mr. Tia passed away at the Upper East Regional Hospital.

Politician John Akologu Tia served as the previous Minister of Information. He served as Talensi’s MP from January 1993 until December 2012.

When Mr. Tia was appointed Press Secretary of the Upper East Regional Secretariat of Peoples Defense Committees/Workers Defense Committees by the military government’s Provisional National Defence Council in 1982, he entered local politics.

In the 1992 parliamentary election, he ran as a candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and was elected as an MP. Since January 1993, when the Fourth Republic’s first parliament began, he has served as the MP for the Talensi constituency.

In addition, he was a member of the Parliament of ECOWAS. President Mills named him as the Minister of Information in 2009.

He was defeated by independent Robert N. Doameng Mosore in his 2012 effort to hold the Talensi seat.

He said in 2016 that he would not be running for office in the legislative elections.

He also represented Ghana in Cuba as ambassador during the tenure of former President John Mahama.
