Freda Prempeh commends Ghana Water Company for their great initiatives

The Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources praised the Ghana Water Company for their outstanding activities and gave advice to Ghanaians on how to properly protect our water bodies during an event held on Monday, October 23, 2023.

The Minister praised the Ghana Water Company at the occasion for replacing damaged pipelines quickly and establishing an app to track customers who don’t pay their bills. A department has been established to manufacture these pipes in Ghana. Since enormous sums of money are no longer needed to import them, this has had a significant positive impact on the economy. She once more cautioned against making illicit connections during the event.

She used the occasion to counsel Ghanaians against engaging in illicit mining and sand mining, which has a negative impact on our water resources and way of life. Finally, she praised the Ghana Water Company once more for having a call center set up to promptly handle consumer issues.

Yesterday, the Ghana Water Company convened a meeting to give updates to its stakeholders and consumers.

The following are part of its achievements so far.

-164.6 million (164,652,659.67) cubic meters (m3) of water produced in the first half of 2023.

We have added on more volumes from the inclusion of new treatment plants , replacement of old equipments like pumps , reduction in downtimes due the installation of Automatic voltage regulators in most treatment plants , other expansion works ,the volumes increased and definitely the losses will also increase, and that is why we recorded 46% in 2022. In 2023 , there has been improvement. Although the figure is still 4% .it means that, although we have added on more volumes and the losses have increased, we have been able to reduce it to 46% and it’s expected to go down further due to the investments and work being down on the  reduction of the Non revenue water .

–In 2022, Ghana Water generated GH¢1.4 billion from 173.5 million cubic meters of water produced, which is a 13% increase from the previous year.

These outcomes are the consequence of putting in place an effective billing system, taking preventative action when there are billing irregularities, and adjusting tariffs.

By about GH₵123.3 million in 2022, electronic payments have significantly increased thanks to the company’s electronic billing system.

Over 10,200 urban homes are now connected by Ghana Water’s approximately 282 km expansion of the water distribution infrastructure.

In order to improve water distribution, over 1,500 km of limited main extensions have been completed countrywide. Additionally, 26 km of distribution network improvement work have been completed in order to increase hydraulic performance.

In addition, the business engaged in performance-based contracting for the reduction of water loss and replacing all malfunctioning meters throughout all regions.
