A nationwide strike has been declared by the Ghana Highway Authority’s (GHA) Union and Senior Staff Association.
The strike will start on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, in protest of the National Roads Authority Act, 2024 (Act 1118), according to the union.
Employees at GHA’s headquarters, regional offices, road maintenance units, and other facilities nationwide are participating in the indefinite strike.
The association published a statement outlining a number of important requests, including that the Act’s implementation should stop and that appointments made under it should be revoked since they are in violation of Ghana’s Constitution.
“These appointments are void, as they contravene Article 195 of the 1992 Constitution,” the association stated.
The World Bank’s 2022 “Diagnostic Study for Transforming Ghana Highway Authority” aligns with the Union’s need for extensive consultations on the reforms required inside GHA.
The Act, it is argued, will create bureaucratic inefficiencies and diminish GHA’s liberty.
Additionally, the union is calling for the dismissal of GHA Board Chairman Ing. I. K. Mensah and Chief Executive Ing. Collins B. Donkor, alleging that they failed to sufficiently involve workers in the Act’s drafting and supported reforms that neither better the Authority’s operations nor serve the interests of employees.
As the group put it, “The workers of GHA have lost confidence in these leaders,” and the proposed changes would negatively impact institutional efficiency and personnel welfare.
