Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) has reaffirmed that its job is to supervise the election process, not to choose the president or Members of Parliament (MPs).

The EC’s decision to recollect and announce the results for seven of nine controversial parliamentary constituencies—all of which were won by the New Patriotic Party (NPP)—was widely criticized before this clarification was made. Okaikwei Central, Nsawam Adoagyiri, Ahafo Ano North, Ahafo Ano South West, Obuasi East, Tema Central, and Techiman South are the constituencies in question. The outcomes for Ablekuma North and Dome Kwabenya are still pending.

The EC’s announcements have been vehemently opposed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which has declared the acts unlawful and promised to challenge them using all available channels.

Dr. Bossman Asare, the EC’s deputy chairperson in charge of corporate affairs, stressed during a news conference in Accra on Tuesday that the Ghanaian people alone have the power to choose their leaders.

“The commission has always maintained that it is not the responsibility of the commission to make someone the president or MP. That is the sole responsibility of the people of Ghana and the commission will ensure that the will of the people as expressed at the polling stations is reflected at all times,” Dr. Asare stated.

Concerning the two unresolved constituencies, Dr. Asare assured the public that their MPs-elect would be announced shortly.

He went on to say, “We hope that the MPs-elect for the two outstanding constituencies will be elected very, very soon, way before the swearing-in Parliament.”
