The church, according to former president John Dramani Mahama, is to blame for the nation’s economic woes, as they have been silent about the government’s excessive borrowing and extravagant spending over the years.
On his visit to the Bono Region, and more especially Techiman, Mahama said he was disappointed in the clergy for keeping quiet when the government the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration in particular was taking out large loans to fund projects that never happened.
He emphasized that the nation’s current economic woes are partly attributable to the clergy’s lack of outspoken resistance to the borrowing binge.
Mr. Mahama claimed that the nation would not be in its current situation if the clergy had made a position and spoken out against the government’s insane borrowing.
Mahama claims that because the clergy choose to say nothing, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was left to criticize the government’s policies on its own and without the backing of religious authorities.
He bemoaned the fact that the current condition of affairs was brought about by the clergy’s silence.
