The National Democratic Congress (NDC) will select John Dramani Mahama’s running mate for the 2024 election, according to the former president.

This was in response to requests made by a few traditional leaders in Asunafo South that the flagbearer take their MP, Eric Opoku, under consideration for the role.

Similar requests for a Bono native to be selected for the position have already been made by the queen mother of the Bono Traditional Council.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has received a request from Sunyani Nana Akosua Dua Sika Asor Brayie’s queen mother, asking him to choose a running partner from the Bono Region.

She informed Mr. Mahama that since the people of the Bono Region had supported him and the NDC throughout the years, they would like him to select a regional candidate for vice president in return.

“He is backed by the Traditional Council. Since his wife is from the Bono Region, we know he adores this area, thus I would want to make a plea to him. During a public meeting with Mr. Mahama in Wenchi as part of his building the Ghana Together tour, she stated, “We want him to choose his running mate from this region this time. We have selected vice president from other places for quite some time.

However, Mr. Mahama stated that although the position is significant, there are established protocols for selecting the best candidate.

During a public appearance in the Ahafo Region, Mr. Mahama urged calm while the party anticipates making the decision.

He stated to the audience; “What I will say is that, just like custom has it, our party also has processes to select candidates for various roles.”

“To choose a running mate, the presidential candidate, national executives, and Council of Elders convene. But next year is when that process will begin. Thus, continue to pray for such a moment, Mr. Mahama clarified.
