Effective April 1, 2024, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has increased passport application fees significantly. Under basic service, the cost of the 32-page booklet is now ¢500, while the 48-page booklet is now ¢644.

Applicants will now pay ¢700 for a 32-page booklet and ¢800 for a 48-page booklet for expedited processing.

Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, the minister of foreign affairs, suggested to the Committee on Subsidiary Legislation of Parliament in December of last year that costs need to be adjusted in order to make up for manufacturing losses on passport booklets.

Botchwey stressed that because of current economic hardships, Ghanaians must pay reasonable passport fees and that the government’s subsidy is no longer viable.

At the moment, printing a passport booklet costs GH¢400; each applicant pays GH¢100, thus the government picks up the remaining GH¢300.

It was made clear in a statement issued by the Ministry that the charge modifications are applicable to every service the Ministry offers.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration wishes to inform its valued clients that, in accordance with the fees and charges (Miscellaneous provisions) Regulations, 2023 (L.I 2481). There will be an adjustment in the fees and charges for all services provided by the Ministry. The adjustment will take effect from Monday, 1st April, 2024,” the statement added.
