The Minister for Trade and Industry and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Adansi Asokwa constituency Hon, K T Hammond says government is committed to reconstruct La General hospital.
Addressing Members of the parliamentary press corps Hon, K T Hammond revealed that even though government have challenges to access the loan approved by parliament to execute the project but finally there have been sanity in the new financial agreement putting in place for the project to begin soon.
“As am talking to you now the Finance Minister is making funds available to the contractor and they are already on the grounds to commerce work” he said.
After the hospital’s administration revealed serious structural issues in 2015, the La General Hospital was demolished in 2019. On August 10, 2020, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo cut the sod to mark the beginning of the La General Hospital Redevelopment Project, although construction has not yet started on the property.
The deteriorating state of the current facilities made it unsafe for both personnel and patients, necessitating the hospital’s reconstruction.
“Recently the president and his cabinet have taken a decision a very clear decision that La General hospital will be constructed in its original design and its has been agreed by the president and his cabinet that design is going to be put out beautifully at the same place and as far as am concerned the finance minister is committed to raise funds for the project” he stated.
K T Hammond assured the indigenes that government will surely execute the project,”read my lips I know what am talk about because in this particular case I have been at the center so take my words the government is committed to making sure that La hospital put up in its original design”.
The government funded hospital redevelopment is estimated to cost $63 million and is schedule to be completed in 24 months.
When works are fully finished, the hospital will have an ultra modern Out Patients Department (OPD) and a well-equipped emergency unit and public health department.
It will in addition have a surgical block with four fully equipped theatres and a maternity unit, in-patient wards for both male and female, medical and surgical wards as well as a children’s ward and a fully installed physiotherapy department, among others.
The facility which was formerly known as the La Polyclinic was established in the early 60’s and had for years provided the general public, especially those in La, Osu, Teshie, Nungua and its surrounding areas with their healthcare needs.
