Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the minister of education, has refuted assertions that the government’s implementation of the free senior high school program has had a detrimental effect on the nation’s educational system.

He claims that the data available indicates the exact reverse, that is, that the program has actually improved educational achievements for pupils throughout the nation.

He declared: “Anyone who claims the Free Senior High School has wrecked the educational system is lying to you.

Dr. Adutwum continued by outlining the statistical data that supported his assertion.
“In 2015, 45.2% or our students passed between A1-C6. In 2020 after the students enrolled onto the Free Senior High School completed, the percentage on students who have passed their WASSCE have increased to about 57.34% in 2020 and 60.39% in 2022,” Dr Adutwum stated.

He believes that the national educational standards are being raised by the government.

“We are dedicated to ensuring that Ghana is never listed as one of the nations that the World Bank defines as having learning poverty. Ghana would not be included in the 87% of our pupils who are illiterate, according to the World Bank, he continued as he addressed the 2023 Ghana Teacher Prize.

Since it was put into effect, the government’s Free Senior High School policy, which aims to give Ghanaian students access to free secondary education, has drawn criticism and discussion.

While supporters claim that it has given thousands of students access to school who might not have otherwise had the chance, others have expressed worries about its impact on the quality of education.

The most excellent teacher for the year 2023 has been chosen as Faith Aku Dzakpasu, a teacher at GRETA ‘D’ Shepherd Two Basic School in the Greater Accra region.

Faith Aku Dzakpasu received a prototype of a three-bedroom residence, one million Ghana cedis in insurance from the State Insurance Company (SIC), and 1,000 exercise books as part of her award. The property can be erected wherever she chooses in Ghana.

Isabella Wussa-Tetteh of Sege D/A Primary in the Greater Accra area was named the first runner-up. As part of her prize, she received a 4×4 pickup vehicle, one million Ghana cedis in insurance coverage from SIC, and 1,000 exercise books.

The second runner-up position on the other hand went to Fredous Idi-Amin of Ogbojo Presbyterian Basic School who also took home a brand new saloon vehicle, one million Ghana cedis insurance cover from SIC and 1000 exercise books.
