Guru elected as University of Ghana SRC President with 50.7% votes

Students at the University of Ghana have chosen Adjei Yeboah Maradona, popularly known as GURU, to lead the Students’ Representative Council (SRC). GURU is the lapaz-toyata hitmaker and popular highlife artist.

At the conclusion of the student elections on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, Mr. Yeboah received an astounding 9,455 votes, or 50.7% of all valid ballots cast, according to preliminary data released by the Electoral Commission (EC).

Emmanuel Owusu Amponsah, his nearest competitor, received a pitiful 6, 645 votes, or 35.8% of the total.

Emmanuel Mensah, Noah Nii Afotey, and Blessing Martey, the other candidates for president, received 378, 1,518, and 458 votes, respectively.

Despite an Adenta Circuit Court interlocutory order, the elections were held, and 18, 659 ballots were cast overall, compared to the expected 59, 629 votes.

A runoff between Deborah Febiri-Damoah and Lorinda Owie Teyehugmeh will be held for the General Secretary position after they each received 5, 642 votes, or 30.2%, and 8,713 votes, or 46.7%, respectively.

Constance Faith Duodu received 3, 705 valid votes (19.9%) of the total. As per the UGSRC Constitution, a candidate must secure 50% of the vote plus one.

Roland Oppong and Jonathan Kankam, who both missed the required 50%+1 criteria, will face off in a second run-off on the Treasure ticket.

Roland Oppong received 9,092 votes(48.7%), at the end of the poll, followed by Jonathan Kankam with 8,120 votes(43.5%), and Michael Arhin Nash with 1,026 votes(5.5%).

The run-off has not yet been scheduled by the Electoral Commission.
