John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, responded to Nana Akomea, the managing director of the State Transport Corporation (STC), who urged him to quit taking ex-gratia payments from the government.
In an interview with Nana Akomea on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” program, the former president was urged to take charge and turn down any ex-gratia due to him.
“So, you, President Mahama, we can’t suggest that go and bring it today if you claim you don’t believe in the ex-gratia, the ones that you have accepted, because we know that you already spent it. But the challenge I’m setting for him is that he shouldn’t take the ex-gratia starting in May; instead, he should cease receiving it, just like Togbe Afede did and gave back his own. He should adhere to the same idea, Mr. Akomea said on Peace FM.
John Mahama clarified on Twitter on Friday in response to Akomea’s assertion that he does not take ex-gratia.
Unlike Nana Akomea, he claimed that he is paid a monthly pension rather than ex-gratia.
Upon leaving their positions, public officials or political officeholders frequently get ex-gratia payments.

My friend Nana Akomea. Really sad what politics can do to a fine mind!
I don't take ex-gratia. I receive a monthly pension.
