In response to Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, the former MP for the NPP who is now running as an independent, President Akufo-Addo has called out Aduomi and denied any attempt in the run-up to the Ejisu by-election.

When Aduomi departed from the NPP to run for office again, he claimed that the ruling party was planning to use coercive measures in order to win the late John Kumah’s seat.

Speaking to supporters during the NPP’s mega rally on Sunday, April 28, President Akufo-Addo asked Ejisu voters to reject Aduomi’s accusations of rigged elections and voiced his indifference to his exit from the party.

Given Aduomi’s past successes under the NPP banner, Akufo-Addo further questioned the justice of Aduomi’s accusations of vote-rigging.

“In 2008, when he defeated the incumbent MP, who was even a Cabinet Minister, did the NPP rig the elections for him? So why does he now allege that we will rig the elections just because he has been defeated by someone else? Is this fair?” he asked.

In addition, the president expressed worries about unidentified parties interfering with the independent candidate’s campaign in an attempt to unseat the NPP.

“Any independent candidate whose history we are unaware of, we oppose. We don’t know if powerful people are influencing their choices. This is not acceptable to us. We will not put up with that.

Therefore, the president pleaded with the people of Ejisu to turn out in large numbers and support NPP candidate Kwabena Boateng.

He emphasized the need of obtaining a legislative majority and Boateng’s role in promoting constituency development. Akufo-Addo emphasized the difficulties of having a narrow majority and asked Ejisu people to vote decisively in order to support the NPP’s legislative program.

“A parliamentary majority is necessary,” stated Nana Addo. You have seen the difficulties that our current parliamentary majority presents. Thus, in order to carry out our mission, we need to obtain a majority, even if it’s just by one vote. Kwabena Boateng will cast the deciding vote.

Lawyer Kwabena Boateng is leading the six candidates running for the parliamentary seat in surveys and opinion polls.
