Kwaku Kwarteng, the MP for Obuasi West, has defended his choice to turn down an appointment made during President Akufo-Addo’s ministerial reshuffle.

Two primary factors were mentioned by the former Deputy Finance Minister in a letter dated February 16.

First, he expressed his belief that he can better support the government’s work from within Parliament and emphasized the crucial role that Parliament plays in monitoring matters pertaining to finance and the economy.

“The role of Parliament in the work of the Executive, especially in matters relating to finance and economy, is critical. It is my humble belief that I can better support the work of government from Parliament,” he said.

Second, Mr. Kwarteng stated that, especially in light of the approaching general elections in 2024, he intended to concentrate on developing messaging and strategies for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

As a non-ministerial member of parliament, he declared, he believes he is better qualified to carry out this function.

Nonetheless, he thanked the President for considering him for such a significant position in the nation’s governance.

“I am eternally grateful to the President for his fatherly influence on my political career and will always stand ready to support his vision in whatever ways I can,” a portion of the statement read.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo appointed 23 ministers and deputy ministers on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, in a contentious ministerial reshuffle. Mohammed Amin Adam replaced Ken Ofori-Atta, who had served as the country’s finance minister since 2017.

However, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has sharply criticized the move, characterizing it as a desperate political manoeuvre that would not result in a meaningful economic recovery.
