The decision to accept National Democratic Congress (NDC) Flagbearer John Dramani Mahama’s choice of Running Mate has been made by 28 of the 33 Constituency Youth Organizers of the Region.

The group has expressed its complete faith and trust in the Flagbearer to select the best choice of candidate as his running partner to secure success for the NDC in the 2024 elections in response to the recent requests for the Flagbearer to replace Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang as his running mate.

This follows recent remarks made by some NDC members in the Eastern Region, including the Eastern Regional NDC Youth Organizer, Richard Etornam Nyarko, who argued that the flagbearer must unavoidably replace Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang with Former Chief of Staff, Hon. Julius Debrah, as his running mate going into next year’s election.

They believe that such attempts to pressurize and pressure the flagbearer into selecting Prof. Naana Jane as his running partner should be categorically rejected because doing so could harm the party’s prospects in the elections of 2024.

However, other groups in the Eastern Regional Youth Wing, defying pressure from the Eastern Regional Youth Organiser, claim in an exclusive interview with us that “The analogy that a change in running mate would by all means culminate into victory for the NDC” is weak and unfounded.

For instance, in 2012, Dr. Bawumia was selected as Akufo-Addo’s running partner. He kept his running companion, who had by 2016 been widely promoted and went on to win the race, even though they were defeated in that election.

This was due to the fact that the leadership was stable and the general public believed that the Flagbearer was confident in the talents of his running companion.

Thus, the choice of whether or not to switch the running partner must be made exclusively on the basis of the flagbearer’s own impartial evaluation and not the narrow interests of any one person or group of people.

You may recall that in a recent press release, the former chief of staff, Mr. Julius Debrah, said he was not interested in taking on such a position at the moment and urged the party’s membership to support the flagbearer in choosing a qualified running mate of his own choosing.

the constituency despite having different ideas about who should be the party’s running mate for the 2024 presidential elections, youth organizers in the East are united in their call for all party members and supporters to have complete faith in the flagbearer to make a qualified running mate nomination in the party’s best interests.
