Following his resounding victory in Ghana’s December 7 elections, National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has stated that he received a congratulatory call from his opponent, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“This morning, I received a congratulatory call from my brother Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, following my emphatic victory in Saturday’s election,” Mr. Mahama wrote in a post on X on Sunday, December 8, 2024.

In a news conference, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged Mr. Mahama’s lead in the polls and congratulated him on becoming the next president of Ghana. He also admitted his defeat.

“I have just called His Excellency John Dramani Mahama to congratulate him as President-elect of the Republic of Ghana,” Dr Bawumia revealed during the press conference.

“The people of Ghana have spoken; the people have voted for change at this time, and we respect that decision with all humility.”

“My concession speech ahead of the EC’s official announcement is to avoid further tension and preserve the peace of our country,” Dr. Bawumia said, elaborating on his wish to maintain national peace and unity.

Additionally, he praised the NDC’s parliamentary win, which guarantees the party a majority in the upcoming legislature.

“The NDC has won the parliamentary election and the presidential election decisively, but they are still awaiting the final collation,” he stated, referring to former President Mahama and the party.

However, the Electoral Commission (EC) has not yet formally announced the nation’s president-elect or the winner of Saturday’s elections.
