Tensions erupted during the current voter registration exercise when National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters confronted purported non-residents who were allegedly bused in from Ketu North’s Afefe district around midnight in order to register voters.

It was said that the non-residents were brought in from Pius Enam Hadzide’s hometown, the parliamentary candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Supporters of the NDC said that the non-residents should be sent back to their hometowns because they were not allowed to register.

Tension in the region escalated as a result of these intense altercations. After stepping in, the police detained the suspects and eventually granted them bail.

At the voter registration center on Wednesday, May 8, after they defiantly completed the process, the suspects were confronted by NDC operatives.

Reports that the Asuogyaman MP used derogatory words against Ewes during the altercation were refuted by NDC Constituency Secretary Clement Amagatse, who claimed the MP was not there.

Rather, he charged that Hadzide’s close allies were demeaning Ewes by endorsing the MP over their own.

On Tuesday, May 7, the Electoral Commission launched its limited voter registration exercise with the goal of enrolling around 623,000 new voters in Ghana.

The 21-day exercise is scheduled to conclude on May 27, 2024.

The EC said that, as a result of difficulties with online registration, offline registration will take effect on May 9, 2024.
