The petition was formally submitted to Parliament in Accra by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Following Tuesday’s ‘Enough Is Enough’ demo, the NDC’s main demands were outlined by the party’s general secretary, Fifi Kwetey.
Mr. Kwetey emphasized in his presentation how logical the NDC’s desire is for a forensic audit of the voter register.
He maintained that authorizing the audit should not be problematic if there is nothing to conceal.
In order to create a legitimate voter registration for the next elections in 2024, he asked Parliament to exercise its power to make sure these objectives are fulfilled.
He listed their requests, which included the expeditious release of the forensic results and a bipartisan investigation of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) actions that resulted in a forensic audit of the voter register.
The remaining items include re-exhibiting the voter register, allowing five days after the audit to do so, correcting unapproved vote transfers, adopting a final schedule for electoral activities, calling an urgent meeting of interested parties, including the African Union (AU) and ECOWAS, and putting accountability and integrity measures in place to stop future voter register manipulation.
Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader, accepted the petition, indicating that the NDC’s concerns will be addressed promptly.
He said, “This is one of the several ways to enrich our democracy.”
In addition to encouraging participation, he said, “If there are genuine concerns, we can raise them at the discussion table.”
The Electoral Commission’s (EC) reluctance to allow a forensic audit of the voter registration sparked the NDC demo.
Currently, the demonstration is happening along the authorized routes in each of Ghana’s sixteen regions.
