Sources close to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have revealed that Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has received the endorsement of the Council of Elders of the NDC to compete as John Dramani Mahama’s running partner in the general election scheduled for December 2024.

Next week is anticipated to see the announcement of Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as John Mahama’s running partner, after her own advocacy and the Council of Elders’ support. The source claims that the NDC elders’ decision would now be presented to the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) for review and approval.

In a news statement dated Tuesday, February 27, 2024, the NDC General Secretary stated that the party has officially received word from its presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, about his running mate’s nomination in accordance with Article 45 of the NDC Constitution.

“In response to this communication, the party is pleased to announce that a meeting of the Council of Elders will convene at 11:00 hrs on Thursday, 7 March 2024, to deliberate on this significant matter. Subsequently, the National Executive Committee will gather at 14:00 hrs on the same day to further consider the nomination” the press release of the NDC general secretary read.

“The NDC is confident that the running mate will bring a wealth of experience, expertise, and dedication to our campaign. The selection will undoubtedly complement the vision of our esteemed leader, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, as we collectively strive to “Build the Ghana We Want together,” the further read.

His running mate in his abortive bid to win the presidency in the 2020 general election was Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, a former education minister in the John Mahama administration who held power from January 7, 2013, until January 7, 2017.

Opoku-Agyemang’s selection as Mahama’s running mate signifies the NDC’s decision, made since 2012, to once again choose its vice presidential candidate from the Central Region.
