Nkrumah is a “Leader of Independence,” not the country’s founder – Nana Akomea

According to Nana Akomea, Managing Director of the Intercity STC, Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, was not the country’s founder as is often believed by the populace.

For his enormous contribution to Ghana’s independence from the British colony, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah is revered as the nation’s creator.

As a result, Dr. Nkrumah was remembered on every Founder’s Day until President Nana Addo ended the tradition in 2017 to ensure Ghanaians also paid tribute to his (Kwame Nkrumah) associates.

In order to honor the contributions of all those who spearheaded the fight for Ghana’s independence, particularly the “Big Six,” August 4th is a national holiday in Ghana.

Not to minimize Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s significant contribution to the struggle, September 21st has been designated as Nkrumah’s Birthday and is a legal holiday.

Despite this, the controversy over whether August 4 should be Founder’s Day or Founders’ Day continues, especially given that tomorrow, September 21, 2022, is set to be a national holiday. The topic of “Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day” was brought up on Tuesday morning’s “Kokrokoo” show on Peace FM.

Calling Dr. Nkrumah the creator of Ghana is a historical breach in the eyes of the STC Boss.

“Let’s even accept that we (Ghana) have a Founder but it can’t be only one person of the name Kwame Nkrumah. I don’t believe that. In fact, the history doesn’t support that only one person brought us our independence,” he stated.

He justified renaming August 4th as “Founders’ Day” by arguing that doing so honors all participants in Ghana’s battle for independence. He applauded the Akufo-Addo administration for making this change.

In response to the question of whether Dr. Kwame Nkrumah should be referred to as the founder of Ghana or not, Nana Akomea stated: “The people who took us to the 6th of March are independence leaders, but we have adopted it as Founders’ Day and are battling over it.

The country was known as Gold Coast before people arrived, and when they did, Ghana, which is what it is now known as, was already there. This is the foundation for my claim. If you label yourself the founder because you helped us achieve independence, that makes Robert Mugabe the founder of Zimbabwe because Togo also achieved independence when it comes to Africa.

South Africa was founded by Nelson Mandela. But nothing comparable exists. I’ve never read or heard that Kenneth Kaunda founded Zambia or that Nelson Mandela founded South Africa. They are all leaders for independence.
