Residents who identify as supporters of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) say if the government has not finished the Krofrom Market Project, they would not cast as many ballots in this year’s presidential and parliamentary elections.
The people stated they felt deceived by the repeated promises made but never kept by succeeding governments in an interview with Ghanatodayonline.com reporters Juliet Tetteh and Nancy Boamaah on Tuesday, March 26, 2024.
The extended time of abandonment, which is having an influence on commercial activity in the area, has frustrated locals and traders who live close to the abandoned project.
Hundreds of vendors who were displaced during the alleged building phase have found it difficult to reestablish their livelihoods, according to One Ante Akosua, who lives close to the market.
“I was plying my trade in this market before we were painfully evicted over a decade ago. They promised to complete the project within 8 months, but it’s been years already, and it remains abandoned,” She said
“I have personally decided not to vote in this year’s elections because of this project and I can assure you that, hundreds of residents share the same sentiments”.
An Opanin Yeboah, claiming to be an NPP card bearing member, chastised the party for failing to complete the project.
He said that, in opposition to his own party, he and his family will not go to the polls this year.
The Krofrom Market Project was started in 2008 by former President John Agyekum Kufuor, but it has since been neglected and pledges to complete it have been broken by subsequent administrations.
The market, which includes more than 2,000 stores, has been under construction for 15 years, which has hampered business and commerce. In order to reduce traffic in Kumasi’s core business center, it must be completed.
The market area, now overgrown with weeds, is a haven for drug users and suspected criminals.
