NPP Primaries: Napo accused of allegedly using ‘mafia tactics’ to disqualify his contender

Ahead of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries on January 27, tension is slowly building in the Manhyia South constituency due to Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s insatiable desire to hold onto his position as MP.

It is alleged that the sitting MP, also known as NAPO, is pushing for Kwabena Addo Amankwah, one of his opponents, to be disqualified for not having cast a ballot in the constituency.

Sources from the constituency indicate that NAPO, who has been the MP without opposition, is determined to keep one of the contenders from running in order to increase his chances of winning because he fears losing.

The fact that Helena Pinamang Owusu, a former Constituency Women’s Organiser, is also running to unseat the bitter MP, makes things even more difficult for him.

Many people think that this is a vote against the MP’s candidacy for a fifth term in office.

Political observers both inside and outside the constituency firmly believe that NAPO’s justification for Amankwah’s disqualification is insufficient to deny the man his right to run for office.

They are supporting their claims with the example of Charles Opoku, who, despite not being a voter in the constituency, was permitted by the party to run on the NPP ticket in the Assin North by-election.

This argument’s proponents contend that if the party gives in to the MP’s demand, it might alienate the constituency, which could harm the NPP’s overall performance in the pivotal general elections of 2024.

Stakeholders in the upcoming primary are wondering if the incumbent is afraid of being challenged.
