The United Progressive Party (UPP) founder, Mr. Akwasi Addai Odike, has revealed that he has given his attorneys instructions to petition the UN and EU in an effort to put pressure on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to redouble his efforts to combat galamsey.

He claimed that the petition’s purpose was to enlist their help in pressuring the president to carry out his campaign against galamsey.

He stated that the president needs to be subjected to worldwide pressure in order for him to uphold the fight against illicit mining, commonly known as galamsey.

He further mentioned that a copy of the petition would be sent to the American embassy in Ghana.

“This is my way of bringing some international pressure to bear on the president to show commitment to the fight against galamsey which has destroyed many of the country’s water bodies,” he stated.

According to him, Nana Akufo-Addo does not currently possess a cure for galamsey, necessitating more international pressure to get him to submit.

Tuesday, October 11, 2022, during a media interview, Mr. Odike disclosed this information.

All signs point to the notion that the president has over the years not demonstrated dedication to the fight, he claimed, thus there is a need to apply international pressure to him in his battle against galamsey.

He was frank in saying that the president has assisted in the fight against illegal mining in the nation.

He said that several of the participants in the galamsey battle are Jubilee House appointees.

He pointed out that if the president had been sincere in his fight against illicit mining, he would have invoked an Executive Instrument (E.I.) that would prohibit surface mining in the nation until a method of mining that does not pollute water bodies is developed.

Six years into their term as president, he stated that the president and his government had been a waste, with corruption growing beneath his watchful eye.

Because funding was arriving from the development partners, he claimed, Nana demonstrated some commitment to the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic by addressing the country about progress made in that effort.

He questioned why the president had chosen a different strategy in the battle against galamsey.
