A GH₵10 million defamation case has been filed by Daniel Marfo Ofori-Atta, Secretary to the Okyenhene, against Hopeson Adorye, a political activist and former member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and Media General, the organization that owns TV3 and Onua TV.
The lawsuit is a result of remarks made by Hopeson Adorye on July 26, 2024, during an appearance on Onua TV.
Adorye is accused of making a number of derogatory remarks during the broadcast, including the assertion that Ofori-Atta co-wrote the contentious “Agyapadeɛ” paper.
Adorye asserted in his remarks that Ofori-Atta was engaged in the writing of the “Agyapadeɛ” document and claimed to have intimate knowledge of its creators.
He said that the publication included allegations of extensive corruption and cooperation within Okyeman and Ofori Panin Stool, as well as their purported involvement in illicit mining operations (galamsey) throughout Ghana.
Adorye is quoted as saying, “I know… the name of the writer. His name has been mentioned here. He is my very good friend… The technical team led by D M Ofori-Atta should further evaluate the following details in order to choose the appropriate sites, galamsey.”
He questioned the honesty and allegiance of Ofori-Atta and others, accusing them of plotting to monopolize Ghana’s gold reserves.
Through his attorney Bright Okyere-Agyekum, Ofori-Atta vehemently denied the accusations in the defamation lawsuit, which was filed on August 14, 2024.
He argues that Adorye’s statements are untrue and detrimental to his, Okyeman’s, and the Ofori Panin Fie’s reputations. Ofori-Atta describes the “Agyapadeɛ” document as a “propagandist piece” that was mainly disregarded until Adorye brought it to light and denies any role in its preparation or distribution.
Ofori-Atta is requesting GH₵10 million in damages as well as a declaration that Adorye’s remarks on Onua TV are defamatory, among other legal remedies.
In addition, he is asking for a permanent injunction to stop Adorye and Media General from making any further defamatory remarks, as well as a public apology and retraction of the claims.
