The government’s “One Village One Dam” initiative, according to Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, the minister designate for local government, decentralization, and rural development, was not a nationwide program.

He clarified that the program was not intended to be a national endeavor that would allow every village in Ghana to benefit from it, but rather for areas in the country’s north.

The explanation was provided by the Techiman South lawmaker during his vetting appearance before the Parliamentary Appointments Committee on Tuesday, March 5.

Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, the member of parliament representing the Ellembelle constituency, questioned the vetting process about the initiative’s status and why the government hasn’t been able to carry out the promised changes.

Mr. Adjei-Mensah Korsah responded by stating that the government was very specific about the initiative and that many people misunderstood the program as having a national scope.

“One Village One Dam was relative to northern Ghana, not across the country,” he explained and added, “oftentimes, people have sought to lump them together…”

Regarding the One District, One Factory initiative, Mr. Adjei-Mensah Korsah stated that its goal was to improve local people’s quality of life and that it could serve as a foundation for more extensive local economic development initiatives.

“once people find it attractive and engage in, we can use that to transform their lives,” he said, adding that all of the government’s flagship programs, such as Planting for Food and Jobs, One District One Factory, and Planting for Exports, are all potential tools for boosting local economies in the nation.

Today, the Appointments Committee of Parliament began vetting the nominees for ministers of state and deputies that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo submitted for approval.
