The planned protest by Organized Labor against the 15% Value Added Tax (VAT) on electricity has been deferred.

Organised Labour called on the government to fully remove the new tax and threatened to carry out the demonstration in spite of the government’s suspension of the policy to allow for additional stakeholder engagement.

The decision was made in response to an official notification regarding the suspension of the contentious tax that was sent by the government to the labor group.

However, Dr. Yaw Baah, Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress, stressed their dedication to fighting against what he calls unfavorable tax policies during a press conference in Accra.

Dr. Baah emphasized that Organized Labour will not hold back when opposing any future unfair tax laws.

Concurrently, Organized Labor has received official notice from the Ministry of Finance that the policy will no longer be implemented.

The Ministry notified Organised Labour in a letter dated Thursday, February 8 that it has directed NEDCO and the Electricity Company of Ghana to stop implementing the contentious policy.

The government announced that it had put a hold on the residential customer electricity consumption tax while it continued to communicate with important parties, such as Organized Labor.

Labour had argued that the introduction of the new tax would only make matters worse for workers who are already suffering from the current state of the economy.
