The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana, and other associated unions have called off their weeks-long work strike

Following discussions with the government regarding their terms of service, during which some of their main concerns were addressed, the suspension took place on Friday, February 9.

Following the meeting, Ken Botchway, the Chairman of TEWU, the University of Ghana Chapter, told the media that the government had settled the nine-month balance owed them for tier two benefits.

“Fortunately government has released the funds to the fund managers as we speak. That notwithstanding, the government is supposed to pay a 3% penalty for delay in releasing the funds,” Mr Botchway said.

He continued by saying that because the government still needed to deal with other problems, the strike was not completely called off.

“There is supposed to be interest calculated on the money the government has released. The government is supposed to use compound interest and not simple interest, if you use simple interest, the contributors are at a disadvantage, so it is another chapter we are going to look at,” he added.

University unions across the country went on an indefinite walkout in protest of the government’s alleged disregard for pension-related matters and the unfair termination of their overtime benefits.

The Teachers’ and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA), the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG), and the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSAUG) are the organizations that are on strike.
