The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, claims that the goal of the party’s protest against the Electoral Commission is to avert conflict.

He said that things that have the potential to turn into conflict ought to be stopped.

Speaking to demonstrators at the party’s “Enough is Enough” protests at the Electoral Commission in Accra, Mr. Aseidu Nketia warned that doing nothing might worsen the situation and encouraged all Ghanaians to act to stop it.

On September 17, 2024, hundreds of NDC members and sympathizers from all 16 regions of Ghana participated in the demonstrations.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has rejected their petition, arguing that it is not required, for them to perform a forensic audit of the voter register prior to the 2024 elections. This is their principal demand.

Since the EC is working to sanitize the register following the required public exhibition exercise, many others have deemed the objections premature.

Nevertheless, Mr. Aseidu Nketia issued a warning, stating that further protests against the EC’s district and constituency offices will occur if their demands are not fulfilled.

“Today is just the beginning. If you think that after the demonstration, everybody will go to sleep, you are joking,” he added.

In addition, he denounced people who seem to be pro-peace yet conceal alleged misconduct, saying that such behavior fuels the flames of war.

“We want to send a message to those who pretend to be peace-loving. If you pretend to be peace-loving and you are condoning wrongdoing, you are actually the one brooding conflict in this country,” Asiedu Nketia stated.
