Ahead of the 2024 elections, the National Peace Council has promised to keep up direct communication with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in order to resolve the party’s concerns.

Following his announcement that the party will not be signing any peace declarations before to the elections, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, National Chairman of the NDC, made this move.

Asiedu Nketia voiced doubts about the efficacy of peace deals during a Wednesday, August 14 appearance on Joy News’ PM Express, pointing to the absence of noticeable results from previous agreements of a similar nature.

“Signing a peace declaration doesn’t mean anything to the party, as previous pacts have not yielded any real results,” Asiedu Nketia stated.

The National Peace Council Chairman, Reverend Ernest Adu Gyamfi, responded by highlighting that the NDC’s choice to forgo signing a peace declaration does not always indicate a threat of violence.

“In the first place, I wouldn’t say that their refusal to sign the peace pact is a cause for violence. I believe these are just initial concerns, and as a Council focused on negotiation and mediation, we take them seriously. Our doors remain open for dialogue to understand and address the legitimate concerns raised by the NDC.”

He went on to say that in order to determine the appropriate course of action, the Peace Council has set up a forum for further talks with the NDC. “We are willing to hear the NDC’s concerns.

He said, “We have already arranged a meeting to hear their perspectives and begin the work of resolving these issues.
