Patrick Kwame Frimpong, the current presiding member of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), was re-elected after failing to receive two thirds of the votes cast in the first round of the 9th Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly election.
Three assembly members ran for the position of presiding member of the KMA: Aggrepa Poku, assembly member for the North Suntreso electoral area, Ernest Ofori Baffour, assembly member for Krofrom East electoral area, and Patrick Kwame Frimpong, the current presiding member.
Twenty government appointees, forty elected assembly members, the mayor, and five members of parliament from the Kumasi Metro were among the sixty-one out of the sixty-five Assembly members who cast ballots.
Patrick Kwame Frimpong, the assembly member for Krofrom East Electoral Area and the current incumbent, received 34 votes, compared to 19 for Ernest Ofori Baffour and 5 for Agrepa Poku.
The electoral law prohibited Agrepa Poku, the assembly member representing North Suntreso, from running again in the second round of the election after he received five votes and finished third.
Ernest Ofori Baffour, who finished second with 19, stepped down for the incumbent, stating that he had no interest in running for office while the second round was being set up.
This forced the electoral supervisor to set up yes-and-know elections so that the Assembly members could certify him as the assembly’s presiding member.
After the second round of voting, the member of the Krofom East Assembly received an overwhelming majority of 55 Yes votes, or over 90% of the total votes cast, compared to just 3 No votes cast against him.
Samuel Pyne, the Metropolitan Chief Executive of Kumasi, praised the Assembly for a successful election in support of Kumasi’s development and expressed his satisfaction with the election of the Krofrom East Assembly Member as the KMA’s Presiding member.
