The Assembly Members of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) have re-elected Mr. Patrick Kwame Frimpong as the Presiding Member (PM) at the Prempeh Assembly Hall.

Out of 66 Assembly members, 58 who were present voted yes in favour of Hon Patrick Kwame Frimpong who is also an Assembly Member for Krofrom East electoral area.

Two candidates, including the incumbent PM, contested in the election after Isham Alhassan and Kwame Agyemang withdrew their nominations.

Per Section 27 of the Local Governance Act (Act 936), the Presiding Member must be elected by at least two-thirds of Assembly members but they failed for two consecutive times to get the required number of 44 to be elected thereby postponing the election to today Thursday, February 26, 2026.

Mr. Ernest Baffour Ofori Fante the Assembly Member for Fante New Town Electoral Area, withdrew from the contest, pledging his support for the incumbent in the “interest of the development of the Kumasi”.

Hon Patrick Kwame Frimpong got 100% endorsement from all the Assembly Members present today.

Addressing the Assembly, Mr Frimpong pledged to be PM for all Assembly Members “I will be a PM for all and not for a particular group of people, I know where I am coming from and I have to do what is expected of me, my main agenda is Kumasi development and I will unite all members to fight for it”, he stated.

The KMA Boss, Richard Ofori Agyemang popularly known as Zuba commended the Assembly members for placing the development of Kumasi above personal ambitions and successfully electing the Presiding Member.

He has also directed all traders operating at the Kumasi City Market to immediately remove hazardous and fire-prone items from the facility.

The directive targets traders dealing in explosive and combustible materials as city authorities prepare to roll out a major enforcement operation on Monday, March 2, 2026.

The move is part of a renewed effort to protect people and property after recent fire accidents hindered trading activities at the market’s Kejetia section, the mayor said.

He emphasized that the exercise is meant to stop more outbreaks, which have recently made traders anxious and have made them loose money.

“We cannot continue to risk the safety of thousands of traders and customers,” Hon. Ofori Agyemang said.

“This exercise is about protecting livelihoods and ensuring that our markets remain safe places for business.”
