On Wednesday, December 27, 2023, President Nana Akufo-Addo officially opened the Koforidua Resource Center in the Eastern Region.

The government’s plan to build ten Resource Centers around the nation to enhance Ghana’s sports infrastructure by promoting intellectual and physical development includes the commissioning of the first Youth Resource Center.

The facility includes a football field that meets FIFA standards, a nine-lane athletic track, tennis, basketball, handball, and volleyball courts; it also has a modern gymnasium, an IT hub, a counseling center, a modern restaurant, and an entrepreneurship center.

In order to build ten youth resource centers around the nation, the Ghanaian government cut sod in 2018. The Dormaa, Dunkwa-on-Offin, Ho, Axim, and Wa Youth Resource Centers are scheduled to be finished in the coming months.

The project was commissioned under the direction of Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo.

Among those in attendance were Kurt Okraku, president of the Ghana Football Association, Pius Enam Hadzide, CEO of the National Youth Agency (NYA), and Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif.

The president posted this on his Facebook page after the commissioning ceremony below:

On Wednesday, 27th December, 2023, I commissioned the Koforidua Sports Stadium with ancillary facilities also referred to as the Koforidua Youth Resource Centre.

The Koforidua Sports Stadium is the first of ten stadia with auxiliary facilities being constructed across the country. They are envisioned as safe spaces for youth congregation and recreation, offering a diverse array of services, including state-of-the-art sports infrastructure, counseling centres, entrepreneurship hubs, and additional amenities that cater to the multifaceted opportunities presented to our youth.

This is not merely a structure; it represents a commitment to creating an environment where our youth can thrive, develop essential skills, and contribute meaningfully to our national development agenda.

It is a facility that proves the commitment of the ruling New Patriotic Party to retaining talents, and raising them to compete on an international level.

I am glad to state that, in the coming days, the following identical projects will also be commissioned and handed over for use in:

a) Wa in the Upper West Region

b) Ho in the Volta Region

c) Axim in the Western Region

d) Dormaa in the Bono Region

e) Dunkwa-on-Offin in the Central Region.

I have been informed about the challenges facing the remaining four stadia with auxiliary facilities – Kaneshie in the Greater Accra Region, Navrongo in the Upper East Region, Yendi in the Northern Region, and Nyinahini in the Ashanti Region. I have prioritised the completion of these facilities, and I am, therefore, requesting the Ministry of Finance and the District Assembly Common Fund, to allocate the necessary funds to the National Youth Authority, in accordance with Act 939, to ensure the timely completion of these legacy projects.
