This weekend, President John Dramani Mahama will meet with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, in an attempt to establish enduring peace in Bawku, which is located in the Upper East Region.

In an effort to end the region’s protracted strife, President Mahama traveled to Bawku and Nalerigu on Tuesday, January 14, as part of a peace-building expedition. He informed Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga II, the overlord of the Mamprugu Kingdom, of the government’s dedication to peace during their meeting.

“I came to appeal for patience and restraint from him and his people as we work towards a peaceful resolution,” President Mahama stated.

Additionally, he spoke with former President Nana Akufo-Addo, who had started mediation efforts while he was in office. Mahama emphasized the crucial roles that Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the late Yagbonwura played in resolving the Dagbon conflict, stating that the Bawku issue can only be resolved with their experience.

In order to discuss the situation and look for measures to continue mediation, President Mahama indicated that he would be visiting the Asantehene on January 19. “After my meeting with Otumfuo, I will provide Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga II with an update on any developments,” he added.

Despite the decades-long unsolved Bawku conflict, President Mahama is committed to working with traditional leaders to achieve enduring peace.
