Ashanti Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Augustus Nana Akwasi, at a press conference in Kumasi, described as “worrying” the busing of students from various Senior High Schools to the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s youth connect program at the Jubilee Park.
“The laws of Ghana do not allow partisan politics in our senior high schools and so for the headmasters of these institutions to have released SHS students, some of whom are minors to participate in political activities at the time they are supposed to be in school studying, indicates how low they are prepared to go to please their NPP collaborators,” said Nana Akwasi.
And in response, the NDC chairman said that on Monday, June 17, she would file a petition with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education as well as the Ghana Education Service (GES).
Their goal is to begin a comprehensive probe into the situation and hold teachers responsible for helping students get ready for political activities.
“On Monday we are petitioning GES and the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education to question all teachers who gathered the students for the rallies,” Nana Akwasi highlighted, indicating the necessity of responsibility and remedial action.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the NPP, has come under fire from Nana Akwasi for allegedly being involved in this contentious matter.
The politician underlined how serious the issue was and called for quick action to stop it from happening again.
“We ask parents, parent associations, Chiefs, traditional authorities, and opinion leaders to collaborate in tackling this matter,” Nana Akwasi emphasized, stressing the significance of preserving the learning environment for Ghanaian pupils.
During a recent tour of the Ashanti region, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was accused by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of disparaging Ghana’s educational system.
He claims that the act was not done for the benefit of the students but rather to generate a swarm effect to support Dr. Bawumia in the NPP’s electoral bastion, where his popularity was rapidly declining.
Additionally, the NDC has said that Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum, the Minister of Education, exposed the SHS pupils to a risky political adventure while classes were in session.
