Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, a senior lecturer in political science at the University of Ghana, predicts that the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which is now in power, would be impacted by the recent sporadic power outages in the general elections scheduled for 2024.

He said that people utilize indices, such as energy concerns, to choose which candidate or party to support.

Dr. Asah-Asante stated that periodic power outages during former President John Dramani Mahama’s stay in office were a significant factor in his resignation, as the opposition NPP at the time utilized them as a political tool.

“The elections that took Mahama home were fought on the basis of dumsor. This party (NPP) took advantage of that and drummed into the ears of Ghanaians and it formed part of the calculations or contributions that Ghanaians made in deciding who to vote for.

“Remember the dumsor economy which Dr. Bawumia made noise about which was legitimate at the time and the same legitimacy can be brought to bear on the current dumsor which the government is pretending doesn’t exist.”

Further criticizing the government’s response to the present intermittent power outages, Dr. Asah-Asante said that civilians were being disproportionately affected. He emphasized that the administration has to acknowledge the problems and show that it is prepared to find solutions.

“We sense it. We are aware of it. Nobody should fool themselves into believing that just because you haven’t stated it clearly and loudly doesn’t imply that dumsor doesn’t exist. No one can fool anyone, and it does. Honesty is necessary in the handling of governance.

Proceed with honor; something is wrong. Simply said, be honest about it. Declare openly that there is an issue and that as leaders, we will work to find a solution.
