Secretary General of the CPA meets with leadership of Parliament

The Majority Leader, Hon. Osei-Kyei Mensah Bonsu, and the Minority Leader, Hon. Cassiel Ato Forson, received a courtesy visit from a three-person team from the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) at Parliament House.

The mission is in Ghana to assess the nation’s readiness for hosting the 66th CPA conference, which will take place there from September 30 through October 6, 2023. The delegation is led by Mr. Stephen Twigg, the Secretary-General.

In his remarks, the Majority Leader said that Ghana is happy to host the conference and that Parliament is doing all necessary steps to guarantee a successful conference. He said that the attendees would be safe while they were at the conference and that their security would not be taken for granted.

On his part, the Secretary General was very delightful and impressed with the state of work and preparedness put in so far by the Local Organizing Committee. He was very optimistic that, Ghana will host a successful event.

Prior to this meeting, the delegation had met with the Rt. Hon. Speaker and the Clerk-to-Parliament. The discussions touched on the venue, accommodation, security, conference tours, side events, among others.

One of the Commonwealth’s oldest organizations is the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association. It is a membership organization that was established in 1911 and unites individuals who share a common interest, respect for the law, individual liberties, and the pursuit of the ideals of parliamentary democracy. Members can be united by gender, race, religion, or culture.

Over 180 legislatures (or Branches) from nine different geographic areas of the Commonwealth make up the Association. It gives lawmakers and parliamentary staff a huge opportunity to work together and share best practices on areas of shared interest.
