The newly elected Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, has sent her sincere appreciation to Commonwealth leaders for their faith in her.

The Minister also gave the Commonwealth leaders her word that she would lead the region toward a common goal of growth and inclusion.

“I’m honoured and humbled by the trust of Commonwealth leaders. A lot of work lies ahead. But together, we shall work for a New Commonwealth that works for all its citizens,” she shared in a statement on her X (formerly Twitter) account.

The Commonwealth’s guiding ideals of democracy, human rights, and sustainable development will be promoted by Ms. Botchwey, who will succeed Patricia Scotland, Baroness Scotland of the United Kingdom.

Her leadership is expected to demonstrate her commitment to fostering cooperation and tackling contemporary global issues among the 56 Commonwealth member states.

Choosing Ms. Botchwey, a seasoned lawyer, diplomat, and politician, above two other African candidates—Senator Joshua Setipa of Lesotho and Dr. Mamadou Tangara of The Gambia—marked a major diplomatic milestone for Ghana.

In Apia, Samoa, during the 27th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), this election was held.
