The Head of the Commonwealth, King Charles, received a courtesy call from the new Commonwealth Secretary-General, Madam Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, at London’s Windsor Castle.
In a world characterized by growing tensions and shifting alliances, Madam Botchwey, the former Ghanaian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, formally took over as Secretary-General of the Commonwealth on April 1, 2025, promising to uphold the principles of the Commonwealth Charter.
The organization of 56 countries was led by Madam Botchwey, who followed Madam Patricia Scotland. She was the first African woman and the second African in general.
A third of the world’s population and over 25% of the UN membership are represented by the Commonwealth.
