The impending Special Delegates Conference of the New Patriotic Party has been called a needless election process by Alan Kyerematen’s campaign spokesperson.
Yaw Buaben Asamoa claims that the conference, which would reduce the field of flagbearer candidates from 10 to 5, is an administrative procedure that will prevent candidates from running for office prior to the delegates’ congress on November 4.
To stop the trend in later years, he claims that constitutional revisions are required.
The process, according to Mr. Yaw Buaben Asamoa, is unimportant in choosing the party’s flagbearer.
He claims that rather than reducing the number of candidates from 10 to 5, the party should have allowed all ten to advance to the main delegates congress.
“At this time that we are going to have that conference, I really think it’s unnecessary. I think it’s just a distraction from normal campaigning. It has no bearing on popularity. Maybe in future, as a party we need to look at that constitutional provision and make it more flexible in order to make it much more better,” Buaben Asamoa stated.
Mr Buaben said that will not be the determinant of who becomes NPP’s flagbearer. It’s only an administrative process. It is not significant in terms of determining who is more popular. It is not a political process.
