Ghanaians have been reassured by President Nana Akufo-Addo that the recently built sports facilities, which hosted the 13th African Games, will be properly maintained and suitable for training the next generation of athletes as well as hosting international events.
The President revealed that the facilities will serve as the hub for the soon-to-be-founded University of Sports for Development. They will also serve as the locations for the yearly Ghana National Games, a national sports festival that will bring together champions from district and regional competitions to vie for top honors.
At the African Games closing ceremony held at the University of Ghana stadium, President Akufo-Addo made these remarks. He said that the Games had not only brought together the finest athletes from our continent but also demonstrated the true meaning of African diversity, unity, and a shared goal of promoting the continent.
“The high-level of performances, the display of sportsmanship and competitiveness, which resulted in many athletes setting new personal bests, national records and games records, will, no doubt, inspire up and coming athletes to aim even higher and attain greater standards,” he said.
The African Union Commission, the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa, the African Union Sports Council, the Local Organizing Committee, and other significant stakeholders were acknowledged by Mr. Akufo-Addo for their cooperation and support in making sure that the 13th African Games accurately presented to the global community the distinct experiences, cultures, and aspirations of the African peoples.
He expressed his special joy at Ghana’s ability to deliver top-notch athletic facilities for the Games in spite of all the obstacles faced.
He stated that Ghana’s dedication to the growth of sports in the nation is demonstrated by the Borteyman structure, the Legon Sports Stadium, the Rugby Pitch, the renovated Theodosia Okoh Hockey Pitch, the Bukom Boxing Emporium, the restored Cricket Oval, and other facilities made available for the Games.
With 68 total medals, Ghana came in sixth place on the medal standings. 19 gold, 19 silver, and 20 bronze medals were awarded.
