Dr. Asah Asante, a senior political science lecturer at the University of Ghana (UG), has declared that the leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) must quit acting hypocritically when it comes to political leadership.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) military commanders are now gathering in Accra, the capital of Ghana, and discussed the deployment of a standby force to Niger on Thursday.

The deployment of a standby force to Niger has been ordered by the Authority of Heads of State and Governments of ECOWAS as part of decisions made at its meeting on August 10, 2023, in Abuja, Nigeria.

The military juntas in Burkina Faso and Mali have stated that they will consider any attempt to forcibly reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum in neighboring Niger as an act of war.

Speaking on Friday’s episode of Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey, Dr. Ashanti claimed that the sub-region’s military coups may have been sparked by the ECOWAS leaders’ silence on important concerns including highway robbery and kidnapping.

The deployment of a standby force to Niger has been ordered by the Authority of Heads of State and Governments of ECOWAS as part of decisions made at its meeting on August 10, 2023, in Abuja, Nigeria.

“All manner of security in Niger, so these are some the thing are going to impinge upon the activities of West African soldiers who will be marshal there to engage in getting these people out and that is going to open a whole chapter of activities that may not inure to the benefit of the sub-region.

According to Dr Asant “These are the repercussions, your nationals are going to be affected, you are going to worsen the situation there volatile, the already volatile security situation there. You are going to create enemies for yourself with some of the countries which are already military within the bloc”.

But it’s intriguing that ECOWAS wants to continue in that direction, he continued. Sometimes they have given these things the chance to fester because they have done so. Take a look at the countries in the sub-region that have adopted the third term agenda, changed their constitutions to allow for term extensions, and other similar measures. What did ECOWAS do in response to the typical example of Côte d’Ivoire? Stopping their hypocrisy is necessary.
