An explosion at Joyea Construction at Spintex along the Accra-Tema road on Friday afternoon resulted in the reports of two deaths and five more people undergoing treatment at a hospital.

In an interview with media, DOIII Ebenezer Yenzu, the Tema Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, confirmed the information. He stated that they got a call at about 2:20 pm following the event.

As soon as possible, we had to respond to a distress call regarding an explosion at Joyea Construction. Afterwards, we sent firefighters from the Kasapreko fire station to the area.

“Joyea is into construction works, roofing sheets, trusses and other things. We have gathered that one of the oxyacetylene gas tanks used as part of metal fabrication ruptured. Oxyacetylene is obtained by combining acetylene gas and oxygen, and it is used for welding and cutting of metal,” he stated.

He denied that the explosion caused any fire, but he did state that the fire department will be investigating the reason of the explosion because a number of things may have happened.

“A number of possibilities could lead to the oxyacetylene tank rupturing. It could be due to leakage from the tank, the nozzle, whether the concentration level was too high, positioning of the tank, exposure to heat and other factors. Our investigations will look at all these,” DOIII Yenzu added.

He thinks identifying the precise cause will help prevent a future recurrence.

Ensuring that all risks are contained is the Fire Service’s main goal at the site.

When asked if Joyea Construction’s management had disclosed any information, he said that they would only involve themselves and the employees after they were certain the location was sufficiently safe.

In addition to making sure everyone is safe following the incident, the Fire Service is keeping an eye on the five injured people.

As a means of teaching, DOIII Ebenezer Yenzu suggested that businesses that deal with these kinds of industrial products keep a close eye on their location.
