MTN Ghana reiterated its commitment to collaborating closely with important parties to combat MoMo fraudsters’ activities and safeguard consumers’ monies.
The assurance was given by Nii Adotey Mingle, General Manager of MTN Northern Business District, during a ceremony marking the start of the 2023 MoMo month at Kumasi’s Kejetia Market.
Mr. Adotey said they will continue to cooperate with other partners and industry players to address the barriers in Ghana’s digital payments sector as they strive and work hard to achieve their Ambition 2025 strategy of transitioning to a platform player and a fully fledged digital-first technology company.
Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, and Senegal are emerging as mobile money leaders in the region, according to a 2022 GSMA analysis published earlier this year, making West Africa the region with the fastest expanding mobile money market globally.
Mobile money transactions reached a record GHS 1.07 trillion in 2022 despite the e-levy’s adoption, the Bank of Ghana’s 2022 Summary of Economic and Financial Data reports, up from GHS 902.5 billion in 2021.
“MTN Ghana and Mobile Money Limited are committed to addressing these challenges by working closely with various stakeholders and partners in a bid to build a robust, efficient and more inclusive digital payment ecosystem in the country,” he stated.
According to Mr. Adotey, MoMo Fraud Even though mobile money has made a significant socioeconomic contribution to Ghana, it has also been the focus of certain dishonest people who continue to commit financial crimes and MoMo fraud.
He pointed out that a number of customers have fallen prey to the tricks of these fraudsters, and as a result, they continue to step up efforts across various touch points to stay ahead of them through robust and stringent measures, multi-sectoral collaboration, as well as intensified public education.
He stated that although their efforts have led to a little drop in fraudulent operations, more needs to be done. They will continue to combat MoMo fraud and hold offenders accountable.
Mr. Ernest Mamphey, MTN’s Mobile Money Implementation Controller expantiate much on the 2023 MoMo Season celebrations activities and campaigns across the country.
According to him there will be promotion for consumers, agents and merchants as well.
Consumers who uses MoMo to purchase any product worth Ghc 10 will be given 5 points which can be accumulated to buy airtime or data.
“Agents need to get 110 new subscribers and also help them in downloading and installing of MoMo App, load with just Ghc 5 to win an award. No over charging, no MoMo fraud recorded and the value of transactions increased and even the number of years in the business, branches can lead you to win MoMo cash or other products from MTN” Mr Mamphey stated.
“With the merchants, market storms, stakeholder fora, digital campaigns, Catch Them Young Series, MoMo fraud education among others can also help them in winning Special Awards” he added.
