“We received a warrant of Gh₵47.125m from the government not Gh₵80m – WAEC PRO

Contrary to what Nsawam Adoagyiri MP and Majority whip Frank Annor Dompreh have said, the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) denies receiving 80 million cedis from the government for the administration of this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

On Friday, June 21, 2024, in Parliament, Mr. Annor Dompreh responded to an urgent question from the Minority regarding the reason behind the non-disbursement of over GHC90 million to WAEC for the 2024 BECE. He stated that Abena Osei Asare, the Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, had informed him that GHC80 million had been paid to WAEC.

However, that assertion was swiftly refuted by WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, who stated that, at approximately noon on Friday, the government issued a warrant valued GHC 47.125 million cedis, not the 80 million that had been reported.

“As we speak, we received a warrant of 47.125 million Ghana cedis from the government,” he said to Joshua Kodjo Mensah on Starr Today. That is what our documentation consists of.

This warrant is just a piece of paper; it needs to be processed through the GIFMIS system before it can be used.

Peter Nortsu Kotoe, the ranking member of the Parliament’s education committee, provided additional support for this. The outlandish allegation made by Mr. Annor Dompreh shocked the Akatsi North MP on Starr Today, which was presented by Joshua Kodjo Mensah.

The MP pointed out that Abena Osei Asare, the state minister at the Finance Ministry, had verified in a meeting that a total of 47 million had been granted as payment to WAEC.

The government’s debt to WAEC has been the subject of intense controversy, with many people worried that it could compromise this year’s BECE.

Organizations like the Ghana National Education Coalition (GNECC), which urged the government to take appropriate action, raised the alarm.
