Andre Dede Ayew, captain of the Black Stars, has expressed regret for Ghana’s appalling performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Andre Dede Ayew has stated that the team would bounce back because “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”.

Eight days after the Black Stars conceded two goals in extra time to draw 2-2 with Mozambique and lose the Côte d’Ivoire tournament, he issued a video apology on Tuesday night.

In the final seconds of regulation time, Andre gave away a penalty, setting off a chain of events that resulted in a corner for Mozambique after a mistake by Richard Ofori.

Ghanaians quickly retaliated, accusing the team of lacking motivation and patriotism and denouncing their dedication and attitude. In a video that was made public last night, captain Andre Dede Ayew accepted accountability for the team’s performance and expressed regret for falling short of the expectations of the country.

“These past days have been very difficult for every Ghanaian and every Ghanaian football fan, and myself,” the Le Havre man said.

“I would like to apologise for the results of the AFCON that we just exited. We should have done better. We should have gotten better results too.

“As the captain of the squad, I take full responsibility for what happened on the pitch for the playing body.

“In Football, these are things that happen. These are things that make you stronger. What doesn’t kill makes you stronger individually and collectively.”
