Ahead of the April 30 by-election, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Wontumi, the chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ashanti Region, received boos at during his campaign appearance in the Ejisu Constituency.
When Wontumi tried to address the Bonwire throng, the crowd booed and jeered him, despite his optimism for the ruling party’s triumph.
Young men led by Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, the area’s previous member of parliament, voiced their disgust by yelling “away! away!” and resolutely supporting her as an independent.
One of three independents running for the seat is Aduomi, who is motivated to win back the seat after falling short against the late John Kumah in the 2020 primary.
Lawyer Kwabena Boateng, a candidate of the NPP, is up against Aduomi and two other independent contenders, Gabriel Agyemang Joseph and Attakorah Joseph.
Beatrice Boakye of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) and Esther Osei of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) are both running for the position.
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), meanwhile, has decided not to run in order to concentrate on the national elections in December.
