Ya-Na Abukari II, the Dagbon monarch, has urged Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to run a clean campaign against former President John Dramani Mahama, who is his main rival.
He clarified that while Vice President Bawumia was his son, he should not be seen as an opponent because John Dramani Mahama, a former president, was also his son and stood for the country’s strongest opposition to be reelected.
When the Vice President, who also serves as the NPP flagbearer, visited Gbewaa Palace in Yendi as part of his thank-you tour of the Northern Region, Ya-Na Abukari II made the call in a speech read on his behalf.
He told him that the good Lord had appointed him to head his party, therefore he should not allow his team to deceive him.
He reminded him that his staff was meant to put his ideas and principles—including what they had already decided upon—into practice.
In response, Vice President Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia stated that the purpose of the thank-you visit was to express gratitude to the Overlord of Dagbon for granting him permission to run as the NPP’s flagbearer six months prior, a position he ultimately won after a field of ten competitors.
He arrived with party officials and ministers to praise Ya-Na, saying that the victory was for him and the Overlord of Dagbon. He also pleaded with Ya-Na to pray for him in the 2024 election.
The 2024 campaign, in his opinion, was meant to demonstrate what he and John Mahama would accomplish for the North and for Ghana as a whole.
The Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Alhassan Shani Saibu, stated that the NPP needed a flagbearer after eight years, and the Vice President ran for and was elected.
He claimed that the Vice President had been brought by the Party’s National Chairman, Mr. Stephen Ntim, to acquaint him with Dagbon’s leadership.
He expressed his gratitude to Ya-Na for encouraging him and for giving the vice president a ram and an abundance of yams. He stated that they will travel to Damango to see the Damango overlord from Yendi.
