According to former president John Mahama, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo constantly assigns blame for Ghana’s economic problem to someone or something else other than himself.

The NDC flag bearer candidate claimed that the president constantly looks for a scapegoat rather than accepting responsibility for his “recklessness” while addressing branch and constituency leaders of the party at Jema in the Kintampo South Constituency.

The president once again laid the responsibility for Ghana’s economic problems on the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict in his state of the nation speech to parliament on March 8, 2023.

The president once more attributed the problems with the Ghanaian economy to the COVID-19 pandemic and the continuing conflict in Russia and Ukraine.

Before the twin global crises, President Akufo-Addo maintained that his administration was guiding the country toward wealth, emphasizing that “we have not been irresponsible in borrowing and spending.”

But Mr. Mahama asserted that it was past time for Mr. Akufo-Addo to demonstrate real leadership.

“The first principle of leadership is responsibility”, Mr Mahama said, explaining:. “You must take responsibility for every situation and work to solve it”.

“You will never be able to fix issues if you are a leader who is always searching for someone to accuse,” he said.

What has he and his finance minister done been more careless, the former president pondered.

He claimed that the government had been disregarded despite warnings from the World Bank about its careless spending.

“Even the World Bank warned them that carrying too much debt puts you at risk of falling into financial trouble, but they didn’t heed”.

Today, they have experienced precisely what they were told not to. And you won’t accept accountability?” Mahama questioned.
