As we get closer to the 2024 closed fishing season, the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development is stepping up its efforts to involve stakeholders.
Fishermen have been made fully aware of the impending exercise, according to Sector Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson, who disclosed that massive educational efforts have been made.
While industrial trawlers will have a two-month closure from Monday, July 1 to Wednesday, August 31, 2024, canoeists and inshore vessels will have a closed fishing season from July 1 to July 31.
During his media appearance, the Minister emphasized the extensive outreach that was carried out this year to guarantee that all fishermen are well informed about the closed season.
“We have expanded it this year. We used to bring only a few executives but this time, we added some of the other members and the whole room was full so I believe the education has gone deeper than it has always been,” she stated.
Ms. Koomson outlined current initiatives aimed at directly informing fishing communities.
“Recently, I went to Sekondi and I told them about it and we are still sending them messages. I am also using this platform to inform them again that we should be used to the closed season by now since we know it is very beneficial to us,” Ms. Koomson stated.
