Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, has praised the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy’s accomplishments, claiming that its favorable outcomes have disproved its detractors.
During a Bosomtwe stakeholder meeting, Dr. Bawumia offered his thoughts on the policy, which was introduced by the NPP government in 2017.
He clarified that the introduction of Free SHS has lessened the financial strain on parents because secondary education has historically been difficult for low-income households.
Among other things, he mentioned that the program would help raise Ghana’s literacy rate, which was previously below average.
“Secondary education was a very difficult thing for the poor, which is why the NPP decided to implement free Senior High School. We have successfully implemented the policy and we’re seeing great results.
“Chiefs, we came not too long ago, in 2017, and we did a budget and implemented Free SHS into the budget. Today, it has been eight years since Free SHS was implemented in Ghana and 5.7 million children have benefited from the initiative,” he said.
The Presidential candidate took a jibe at the opponents who were skeptical about the attainment the policy.
“We have proven our doubters wrong. The NDC didn’t believe we could do this, but here we are,” he said.
He further emphasised that his government’s efforts were far from over.
“My government will do more to improve the Free Senior High School policy and also introduce new initiatives to make it better,” Bawumia pledged.
